On February 21, 1970 MacDonald received a pass to attend the funeral of Colette, Kimberley and Kristen at the John F. Kennedy Center Chapel in Fort Bragg. He was escorted by military police and a CID agent. He appeared grim and hunched over. He walked dry-eyed with his head bowed, but toward the end of the service he lost composure, and appeared to sob uncontrollably with no visible tears. After
the services he returned to the hospital.
