1, Leonard J. Maki, WANT TO MAKE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT UNDER OATH

About 1330 hrs, today, 17, Feb 70, I was walking back from Womack Army Hospital towards my unit. I was walking on a road that leads from the rear of the hospital towards the main road, I think it Honecutt Road. I was about 150 meters from the hospital on this road and I saw a brown colored billfold lying on the bank off the side of the road. It was about 5 to 10 feet from the road. I picked the billfold up and looked in it to try and find out whose it was and I saw that the papers in it showed it belonged to a CPT MCDONALD. I took the billfold to the orderly room and showed it to the 1SG. As the 1SG was going through it I knew whose it was already so I told him it belonged to a CPT MCDONALD so he put it down. He called the CID.

Q. At the time that you picked up the billfold and looked through it, did you see any money in the billfold?

A. There was no money in it. Actually I only looked in the portion of the billfold where money is usually kept. I also looked where the credit cards are kept.

Q. At the time of finding the billfold, was any one in the area of the billfold?

A. No, I was the only one on the road.

Q. Did you see any one either drop or throw the billfold or a billfold of any type on the side of the road?

A. No.

Q. Did you see any at all throw any object to the side of the road?

A. No.

Q. Have you heard anything of the incident pertaining to CPT MCDONALD?

A. Yes I have but I did not hear anything of the incident until after I found the billfold. I read in the newspaper where some of his family had been slain.

Q. Do you have any idea who may have either thrown or put the billfold where you found it?

A. No.

Q. Do have anything to add or delete from this statement?

A. I don't think we covered this but the billfold was found on the left side of the road going towards Honeycutt Road away from the hospital
